Hoodoo consists mostly of working time honored magic formulas passed on from person to person. Therefore neither Voodoo or Hoodoo is satanic or heathen. Hoodoo works!! Both Voodoo and Hoodoo are practiced in accordance with the will of Heaven. Voodoo priests and priestesses keep a temple room in their homes and build a relationship with "their Spirits" (Loa and/or Orisha) over many many years of service at the Altars.Ī Hoodoo or Root Doctor practices folk magic by reaching for, speaking to and working with the allies in all of nature while remaining conscious of the role of the Divine in all of life. In the Voodoo religion a priest or priestess calls upon the Orisha or Loa to intercede on their behalf through offerings made to Them at an established and consecrated altar. Since the creation all around us is bountiful in all things and all things have divine creative and magical powers within themselves, their inherent 'ally" (Spirit) can be called upon to help us bring success in our path. In the traditional African belief system the goal of a successful life is to achieve balance and harmony while striving for success and abundance. Many separate folk magic traditions have influenced Hoodoo and its practices derive not only from West African folk magic but also from the Native American and European magical records (Gallic / Celtic etc). ![]() HOODOO is not to be confused with Voodoo which is a religion whereas Hoodoo is a form of African-influenced traditional folk magic, prevalent mostly in the deep South. ![]() It is synonymous with Conjure, or Rootwork. The word Hoodoo is used to describe magico-spiritual work consisting of magic spells and the use of talismans, mojos and/or potions by a person to bring certain benefits to him/herself.
